about

TÌLE is a new group of tree very accomplished musicians in the traditional and world music scene. Their eponymous debut album is a truly collaborative one. Tìle means ‘sun’ or ‘day' in Malian and 'solid floorboards' or 'dancing floor' in Norwegian. Tìle (or Thule) is also an ancient name for a land far north, were the sun in summer never sets.

The lyrics, taken from Mali and Norwegian folk riddles, are accompanied by a variety of instruments such as the Norwegian Kravik-lyre, the Malian hunter's instrument n’goni, percussion, konting, and an electric baritone guitar with electronics. The music features very different approaches to arrangement and sound, but never at the expense of the TÌLE sound. Each member contributed with three different musical ideas that provided foundations for improvisation and exploration. These turned into nine songs that were recorded ‘live’ during three days in Groven's organhouse in Oslo. The result is a warm, rich and mature expression, and as the members of the band says: “The music was created sitting in the same room, listening and responding to each other. This is what we want to pass on to the listeners."

Percussionist and singer Sidiki Camara has played in a large diversity of projects, from the National ballet of Mali to projects with Bill Frisell. He’s one of the great musicians from Mali and has contributed to many legendary recordings from the region. Øyonn Groven Myhren is one of Norway's most revered traditional folksingers, a winner of several national competitions and has collaborated with jazz and contemporary musicians such as Bugge Wesseltoft and Sisu. Olav Torget has a long and steady output in the world music scene, collaborating with both African and northern native musicians both as a guitarist and producer. He has worked with Solo Cissokho, Kristin Abjørnsen and Áššu (UllaPirtijarvi).
